THE VALUE OF RECYCLED POLYESTER

After cotton, the material that we use most to create our collections is polyester.

Like all synthetic materials of petroleum origin, polyester is a non-renewable resource and significantly contributes to carbon dioxide emissions.

For this reason, we have set ourselves the task of gradually increasing the percentage of recycled polyester used in our collections.

From about 400,000 items in 2018, we produced 1.8 million items with recycled synthetic materials in 2021.

By 2030, 100% of our polyester and polyamides will be made from recycled materials or substituted with biodegradable alternatives.

Since 2019 we have produced some items only in recycled polyester. This has allowed us to have a reduced environmental impact and recover the equivalent of 20,000,000 plastic bottles.

A high-performance fibre

The polyester regeneration process allows us to reconstruct the fibre so that it maintains the same performance levels as the virgin material. In its recycled version, polyester allows us to:

  • save up to 85% of energy
  • reduce CO2 emissions by up to
  • limit our dependence on petrol
  • reuse plastic waste (mostly PET bottles) that would otherwise have ended up in landfill.

Recycled polyester is very useful in lots of our lines. Such as Less is Better, Altavia and Ocean Care.

Less is better
A line crated around circularity: innovative items, with simple lines, made from sustainable materials and with a high technical content, such as recycled polyester and polyamide. Less is better is also entirely paper-free: we have substituted the labels with a QR code printed directly on the garment, which allows you to consult the product information online.

Altavia
For the winter season, we have created a collection of puffy jackets for women, men and children made from 100% recycled synthetic materials, including the padding.
2/3
Ocean Care
Our swimwear offer includes a selection of costumes made from materials recovered from the sea: from polyester from plastic bottles, to polyamide from abandoned fishing nets gathered by the diver volunteers of Healthy Seas, of which OVS is an associated partner.

VISCOSE THAT RESPECTS THE FORESTS

Forests play a crucial role in biodiversity conservation and the elimination of CO2 in the atmosphere.

The cellulose fibres extracted from wood are also used in the fashion industry to create particularly versatile and loved fabrics.

Among the cellulose-based fabrics, we prefer those from forests managed following the FSC standard (Forest Stewardship Council) or PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification). By 2030, 100% of our cellulose materials will be made of these fibres.

In 2021 we increased the use of materials produced by Lenzing™, who guarantees both the origin of the raw material from responsibly-managed forests, and processes with a reduced impact, as well as guaranteeing that the fibres are completely biodegradable in all environments, natural and industrial. Also in salt and fresh water.

Traditional synthetic materials, on the other hand, are not biodegradable and this creates significant problems for the waste water treatment systems with regards waste in the seas and the spread of microplastics when washing.

Among the fibres produces by Lenzing we use:
Viscosa Ecovero®
made from trees from controlled and FSC certified forests, through a responsible production process that reduces CO2 emissions by up to 50% as well as the consumption of water compared with traditional viscose, as confirmed by the Ecolabel EU certification, an ecological quality mark of the European Union.

TENCEL®
is the brand of fibres produced from eucalyptus pulp (TENCL Lyocell) and beech pulp (TENCEL Modal). Completely biodegradable, they are made from trees from responsibly-managed forests and through processes with a low environmental impact. For the sustainable development of this material, Lenzing received the Environmental European Award 2020.
